Getting a chip on your car window may not seem like a big deal, but that small chip can quickly grow into a big problem. If you need a window chip repaired, what should you do?
Chips in the windshield often happen while you’re driving. Other vehicles ahead of you on the road can kick up rocks and other small objects, sending them flying into your windshield. Hail can also cause damage, as can drastic temperature fluctuations in a short period of time.
It’s important to fix chips in the glass in order to prevent the damage from getting worse. If you leave the chip as-is, it could grow larger, and even make the glass more susceptible to damage from rocks and such hitting it in the future. Depending on the depth of the chip, water could get in and freeze, causing the chip to grow. Water can also carry dirt into the damaged area, or get trapped and cause fog, making it harder to see.
If the chip is smaller than the size of a quarter, you may be able to fix it yourself with a repair kit. Be sure to follow the instructions on the kit, which will typically look something like this:
Make sure the glass around the chip is clean.
Peel the backing off of the patch and place the adhesive side onto the glass, with the chip showing in the center. Then, peel off the top layer and attach the pedestal.
Add the epoxy resin to the pedestal.
Insert the syringe into the pedestal and pull up on the plunger. This will create a vacuum to pull out any air bubbles. After several minutes, press down on the plunger, which will force the resin deeper into the chip. After another several minutes, remove the syringe.
Remove the adhesive patch. Then, add a drop of the resin onto the chip and apply the UV curing sheet. Be sure your car is in the sun. Once the resin has cured, use a razor blade to scrape off the UV curing sheet and any excess resin.
If the chip in your windshield is larger than a quarter, you will need to have it professionally repaired. Depending on the size and severity of the damage, the entire windshield may need to be replaced.
